At the time that I found out I was pregnant I was working retail. I was on my feet a lot and constantly assisting both clients and my co-workers. It was a very fun but busy job. I decided to tell my boss that I was pregnant a little earlier than I would have liked because I felt that the demands of the job could conflict with the demands of the toilet!
I will never forget my her response. “This is great news! A baby is always a good thing. Your baby could grow up to be president!”.
Up until this point I hadn’t really given any thought to what my baby could be in the future.
What will my baby grow up to be?
The possibilities were endless. That’s one of the most exciting things about new life. There is such a great sense of hope and anticipation.
Now, it’s hard to imagine that I needed help to see this. But I did. I was so overwhelmed by my circumstances, that it was hard to see past that day and dream for tomorrow.
I needed people like my boss to speak hope and life – to help build the anticipation of all of the good things that were to come. Because regardless of how I felt in the moment, the future was full of promise.
Each time someone imparted to me hope and anticipation, I dared to dream a little. Eventually, I got to the point of dreaming about my baby all the time.
I wondered what he would look like. What kinds of things he would like to do and, yes, what he may grow up to be.
My baby could be president!
